Shark Attacks: A Global Issue

Unprovoked Attacks On the Rise

Shark attacks are a global issue, with around 80 unprovoked attacks reported worldwide each year. These attacks can be fatal, as was the case in a recent incident in Egypt where a tiger shark mauled a young man at a popular beach spot. Another fatal attack occurred in June 2005 when a 14-year-old girl from Louisiana was pulled from her boogie board 250 yards from shore.

Organizations Working to Protect Sharks and Humans

The Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File investigated 120 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide. The Global Shark Attack File (GSAF) and the Shark Research Institute (SRI) exist to help protect sharks. The GSAF is the preeminent source of trustworthy information on shark attacks, while the SRI conducts research on shark behavior and ecology.
