Vendor Class Identifier in DHCP Request

DHCP and VCI

Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) is a field in the DHCP request that informs the DHCP server of the vendor and model information of the requesting device. This allows the DHCP server to assign the appropriate IP address and configuration settings for the device.

Device Type and VCI

The VCI can be used to determine the type of device that is requesting an IP address. For example, the VCI "MSFT 50" is used by Windows-based computers, while the VCI "dhcpcd-5.5.6" is used by Android devices.

In the example provided, the device type is shown in the "light cat" field. This field contains the following information:

  • 0x000029 OUI: This is the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) for the vendor of the device.
  • DHCP: This indicates that the device is using DHCP to obtain an IP address.
  • HTTP: This indicates that the device is using HTTP to access the Internet.
  • Device OS: This indicates the operating system that is running on the device.

In this case, the device type is shown as "MSFT 50," which indicates that it is a Windows-based computer.
